MINOS and CPT violating neutrinos

2009

We review the status of CPT violation in the neutrino sector. Apart from LSND, current data favors three flavors of light stable neutrinos and antineutrinos, with both halves of the spectrum having one smaller mass splitting and one larger mass splitting. Oscillation data for the smaller splitting are consistent with CPT. For the larger splitting, current data favor an antineutrino mass-squared splitting that is an order of magnitude larger than the corresponding neutrino splitting, with the corresponding mixing angle less than maximal. This CPT-violating spectrum is driven by recent results from MINOS, but is consistent with other experiments if we ignore LSND. We describe an analysis tech…

Improved comparison of bar P and P charge-to-mass ratios

1995

The measured ratio of charge-to-mass ratios for the antiproton and proton is 1.000 000 001 5 ± 0.000 000 001 1. This 1 part in 109 comparison (1 ppb) is possible because a single or p is now directly observed while trapped in an open access Penning trap. The comparison is the most accurate mass spectrometry of particles with opposite charge and is the most sensitive test of CPT invariance for a baryon system. It is 40 times more accurate than our earlier comparison with many trapped antiprotons and protons, and is more than 45 000 times more accurate than earlier comparisons made with other techniques.

Improved limit on the directly measured antiproton lifetime

2017

Continuous monitoring of a cloud of antiprotons stored in a Penning trap for 405 days enables us to set an improved limit on the directly measured antiproton lifetime. From our measurements we extract a storage time of $3.15\times {10}^{8}$ equivalent antiproton-seconds, resulting in a lower lifetime limit of ${\tau }_{\bar{{\rm{p}}}}\gt 10.2\,{\rm{a}}$ with a confidence level of $68 \% $. This result improves the limit on charge-parity-time violation in antiproton decays based on direct observation by a factor of 7.

On CPT Symmetry: Cosmological, Quantum-Gravitational and Other Possible Violations and Their Phenomenology

2004

I discuss various ways in which CPT symmetry may be violated, and their phenomenology in current or immediate future experimental facilities, both terrestrial and astrophysical. Specifically, I discuss first violations of CPT symmetry due to the impossibility of defining a scattering matrix as a consequence of the existence of microscopic or macroscopic space-time boundaries, such as Planck-scale Black-Hole (event) horizons, or cosmological horizons due to the presence of a (positive) cosmological constant in the Universe. Second, I discuss CPT violation due to breaking of Lorentz symmetry, which may characterize certain approaches to quantum gravity, and third, I describe models of CPT non…

T and CPT Symmetries in Entangled Neutral Meson Systems

2011

Genuine tests of an asymmetry under T and/or CPT transformations imply the interchange between in-states and out-states. I explain a methodology to perform model-indepedent separate measurements of the three CP, T and CPT symmetry violations for transitions involving the decay of the neutral meson systems in B- and {\Phi}-factories. It makes use of the quantum-mechanical entanglement only, for which the individual state of each neutral meson is not defined before the decay of its orthogonal partner. The final proof of the independence of the three asymmetries is that no other theoretical ingredient is involved and that the event sample corresponding to each case is different from the other …

Decoherent neutrino mixing, dark energy, and matter-antimatter asymmetry

2004

A CPT violating decoherence scenario can easily account for all the experimental evidence in the neutrino sector including LSND. In this work it is argued that this framework can also accommodate the Dark Energy content of the Universe, as well as the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry.

Lorentz invariance and gauge equivariance

2014

Trying to place Lorentz and gauge transformations on the same foundation, it turns out that the first one generates invariance, the second one equivariance, at least for the abelian case. This similarity is not a hypothesis but is supported by and a consequence of the path integral formalism in quantum field theory.

Discrete Symmetries CP, T, CPT

2016

The role of Symmetry Breaking mechanisms to search for New Physics is of highest importance. We discuss the status and prospects of the Discrete Symmetries CP, T, CPT looking for their separate Violation in LHC experiments and meson factories.

Neutrinos, DUNE and the world best bound on CPT invariance

2017

CPT symmetry, the combination of Charge Conjugation, Parity and Time reversal, is a cornerstone of our model building strategy and therefore the repercussions of its potential violation will severely threaten the most extended tool we currently use to describe physics, i.e. local relativistic quantum fields. However, limits on its conservation from the Kaon system look indeed imposing. In this work we will show that neutrino oscillation experiments can improve this limit by several orders of magnitude and therefore are an ideal tool to explore the foundations of our approach to Nature. Strictly speaking testing CPT violation would require an explicit model for how CPT is broken and its effe…

A search for neutrino–antineutrino mass inequality by means of sterile neutrino oscillometry

2015

The investigation of the oscillation pattern induced by the sterile neutrinos might determine the oscillation parameters, and at the same time, allow to probe CPT symmetry in the leptonic sector through neutrino-antineutrino mass inequality. We propose to use a large scintillation detector like JUNO or LENA to detect electron neutrinos and electron antineutrinos from MCi electron capture or beta decay sources. Our calculations indicate that such an experiment is realistic and could be performed in parallel to the current research plans for JUNO and RENO. Requiring at least 5$\sigma$ confidence level and assuming the values of the oscillation parameters indicated by the current global fit, w…
